Moving Through the City
Transportation is the veins of a city. Whether you are a tourist or a resident, you need to understand how to move. It involves reading maps, understanding schedules, and buying tickets.
Public Transport "Take the bus," "catch the train," "ride the subway." Note the verbs we use. You get "on" a bus, train, or plane, but you get "in" a taxi or car. This small preposition distinction is a common trap for learners.
Driving If you drive, you need to know about "traffic lights," "parking spots," and "gas stations." Traffic vocabulary is often frustratingly useful: "traffic jam," "roadwork," "detour." Being able to explain why you are late is a crucial social skill!
Asking Directions "Excuse me, how do I get to...?" "Turn left," "go straight," "it's on your right." These imperative forms are simple but essential. Don't be afraid to ask strangers for help; most people are kind.
