Populism is a political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups. Populist leaders often present themselves as the voice of the 'true people' fighting against 'corrupt elites', 'globalists', or 'immigrants'.
This movement has swept across democracies, from Brexit in the UK to elections in the US, Brazil, and Europe. It feeds on economic anxiety and cultural insecurity. While populism can bring attention to neglected issues, critics warn it often slides into 'Authoritarianism'.
Authoritarian leaders weaken democratic institutions—attacking the free press, controlling the judiciary, and changing election laws—to stay in power indefinitely. The challenge for democracies is to address the real grievances of voters without destroying the democratic system itself.
