Tackling Tables 📋

Tables can be overwhelming with data. The key is selection.

Strategy

  1. Scan for Extreemes: Find the highest and lowest numbers immediately.
  2. Look for Patterns: Do rows increase ltr? Do columns decrease ttb?
  3. Group: Discuss high-value categories together vs low-value ones.

Sample: Consumer Spending

Prompt: Table showing spending on food/clothing in 4 countries.

Sample Excerpt: Ireland spent the highest percentage on food (30%), closely followed by Italy at 26%. In contrast, Sweden had the lowest expenditure in this category at just 15%. Regarding clothing, the trend was reversed; Sweden topped the list with 5%.

Discussion

  1. Why shouldn't you write every number?
  2. What helps you read a table quickly?
  3. How do you link two different categories?
